Specifies the purpose of the dimension value. Dimension value type is based on the same principles as Account Type in the Chart of Accounts and is used to create a hierarchical relationship between dimension values. This feature can be effectively utilized to analyze business activities at different levels of detail. Dimension values are automatically assigned the dimension value type Standard by the program, but you can change this. Choose the field to select one of the following five options:
Dimension Value Type | Function |
---|---|
Standard | Used for standard posting of dimension values. |
Heading | A heading for a group of dimension values. |
Total | Total is used when you want the program to total a series of balances on dimension values that do not immediately precede the Total dimension value. You use Total when dimension values from several dimension value groups should be totaled. If you use the dimension value type Total, the Totaling field must not be left blank. |
Begin-Total | A marker for the beginning of a series of dimension values to be totaled ends with an End-Total dimension value type. The Begin-Total dimension value type can also be posted to in the same way as the dimension value type Standard. |
End-Total | A total of a series of dimension values that starts with the dimension value type Begin-Total. The total is defined in the Totaling field. |
Begin-Total and End-Total are used together to group dimension values, as well as to create hierarchical relationships of groups within groups. In this example, you can see that a user has used the Dimension Value Type field to create a Northern European dimension value group within the European dimension value group:
Code | Name | Dimension Value Type |
---|---|---|
10 | Europe | Begin-Total |
20 | Northern Europe | Begin-Total |
30 | Northern Europe (EU) | Standard |
40 | Northern Europe (Non-EU) | Standard |
50 | Northern Europe, Total | End-Total |
60 | Southern Europe | Standard |
70 | Europe, Total | End-Total |
This means that a posting for the dimension value Northern Europe (EU) is an independent amount, as well as a component of both the Northern Europe and Europe amount totals.
When you click Actions, point to Functions and click Indent Dimension Values, the dimension values between Begin-Total and End-Total are automatically indented one space. At the same time, the Totaling field for the dimension value of the End-Total type is filled in based on the dimension values in the group. In the example above, the sales from both EU and non-EU countries/regions would be added up and the result displayed in the balance field for the Northern Europe, Total dimension value.
You can let the Indent function fill in the Totaling field for End-Total dimension values instead of adding the numbers yourself.
